Kalawa was founded by DJ Christo, Oskido, and Don Laka in the early 1990s. The name is an amalgamation of the founding members' last names. The three producers would regularly meet in Laka's Hillbrow home, where Kalawa's first underground project, the 1991 Brothers of Peace EP, was made. In 1995, the label joined forces with Jazmee Records, and has since been known as Kalawa Jazmee Records.
Notable for the its contributions to kwaito (the label's first major release was Boom Shaka's debut album ), the label has since expanded to include hip hop releases.
