One of the defining bands of the 1990s, Boom Shaka was instrumental in the rise and development of Kwaito as a genre and movement. The group consisted of Lebo Mathosa, Thembi Seete, Junior Sokhela, and Theo Nhlengethwa.
Background
Lebo Mathosa and Thembi Seete would meet up after school and, under the moniker of L&T, practice making music by covering their favorite artists' works♫. These artists included the likes of MC Lyte, Janet Jackson, and Brenda Fassie. Junior Sokhela was a member of the Prophets of Da City hip hop group, and Theo Nhlengethwa's fashion design would influence the group's eclectic look. The four members were grouped by Oskido at Club Arena. The group's name is a reference to the explosive impact that they sought to make with their music, and the legendary Shaka Zulu.
