Born in the Benoni township of Daveyton, Lebo Mathosa was a kwaito and RnB singer who first gained recognition as a founding member of Boom Shaka. She left the group in favour of a solo career in 2000, prompted by royalty-fueled group tensions.

Background

Lebo Mathosa had the archetypal beginnings of a singer; she enjoyed gospel music, sang in her local church choir from the age of seven, and idolised larger-than-life music that surrounded her, especially Brenda Fassie's. At just 14 years old, she had the opportunity to not only meet Fassie, but to live and learn with the icon as her protégé.
